REDEMPTIVE FAMILY DRAMA “CUBA AND HIS TEDDY BEAR” GIVEN MIDWEST PREMIERE

CUBA AND HIS TEDDY BEAR, Reinaldo Povod’s explosive drama about the relationship between a small time drug dealer and his son, receives its Midwest premiere in a co-production by UrbanTheater Company and PEOPLE*S THEATER of Chicago. The searing family portrait runs November 6 through December 13, with preview performances November 4 and 5, at The Batey Urbano Performance Space, 2620 W. Division Street, Chicago.

CUBA AND HIS TEDDY BEAR, with its themes of redemption, accountability and forgiveness, had a sold out world premiere in 1986 at New York’s Public Theatre, moving thereafter to Broadway. The Joseph Papp-produced drama starred Robert DeNiro, Ralph Macchio and Burt Young, each making his Broadway debut.

A resident playwright at Papp’s Public Theater, Reinaldo Povod was age 26 when CUBA AND HIS TEDDY BEAR debuted. During his brief career, he garnered the prestigious George Oppenheimer/Newsday Award (“The Oppy”) and was honored by The Sundance Institute for his play “La Puta Vida Trilogy.” Mr. Povod died in 1994 of AIDS; he was 34.

Marilyn Camacho, a founding member and a current Co-Artistic Director of UrbanTheater Company, makes her directorial debut with CUBA AND HIS TEDDY BEAR.
